Speed Linking for 1/20/08

  1. The How-To-Geek offers up a great tip for getting Windows Vista to automatically disable Aero before starting application. It also automagically turns it back on when you close the app. This is absolutely great for anyone looking to squeeze a little more performance out of their system during games like Crysis or (the PC game I'm currently working on) Hellgate London.
  2. The folks at 1Up have compiled a list of the top 101 free games of 2008. There are tons of familiar titles and tons of new ones so be sure to check it out.
  3. Could Kid Icarus be making his triumphant return at the hands of Factor 5? It's been a long time since i played th original Kid Icarus - I can't remember most of the game to be honest. The thing about Nintend, though, is that they love using nostalgia to sell games. After all the hype that floated around a potential Kid Icarus game during the launch of the Wii it only makes sense they'd give it a try. But Factor 5? After Lair I'm not quite sure what to expect. For more on this rumor check out the post over at Joystiq.
  4. Ever seen an M16 Light Gun for the original NES? Neither had we until GoNintendo found one on eBay. Check out their post about it.
  5. Lastly we have a list of the top 12 covers of the Still Alive. My personal favorite is below - if you've bought The Orange Box Soundtrack then you've got a copy of Jonathan Coulton singing the song but this other won is a pretty solid one too.

Fallout 2 Restoration Project 1.1 Released

Fallout 2 BoxartFallout 3 is probably one of the games I'm most looking forward to this year. The thing is I've never played Fallout or Fallout 2.

I own them - I've just never actually played them.

Right now looks like as good a time as ever to dust off the old CDs. A group of independent modders recently released the "Fallout 2 Restoration Project" and have just updated it to a 1.1 release. The Fallout 2 Restoration Project essentially sets out to add content to the game which, for whatever reason, wasn't originally included.

Listed as both a mod and an expansion the Project apparently contains several new areas (large and small), new dialogues, and even expanded portions of existing areas.

It sounds like the folks behind the Project are really dedicated and have done some great stuff here - I can't wait to check it out.

You can check out the official Fallout 2 Restoration Project 1.1 Thread over at No Mutants Allowed.

Star Trek Online Faces Major Setback

Star Trek OnlineStar Trek Online (the Star Trek MMO) has been in development for quite a while now. Back when Star Wars Galaxies was getting started there were tons of Trekkies claiming how much better STO would be than SWG.

As it turns out it looks like it'll be even longer before anyone gets a chance to step into a Star Trek Themed MMO thanks to a recent development at Perpetual Entertainment. The development : P2 has decided to shift creative gears and is now concentrating on "casual games."

While the game hasn't been scrapped (a new developer will gain access to the license and content) Perpetual is apparently taking the code with them. That means all programming on STO has to start from scratch - Ouch.

Toribash

I don't play nearly as many freeware games as I probably should. I'm too busy spending money I don't have on commercial games and gadgets.

Thankfully there are a few folks out there who do take the time to enjoy what the web has to offer! The Independent Gaming Source has compiled a list of the best freeware games of 2007 and offers up plenty of runner-up picks as well. There are a ton of games here and they're not just Flash titles!

One that caught my eye early on was Toribash. I'll be giving it a try this week. Take a peak yourself and let us know if any sound familiar or are worth checking out.

World in Conflict only $19.99

World in Conflict BoxartOne of the highest rated RTS games of 2007 is currently on sale at Amazon for a whopping 60% off. Regularly priced at $49.99 you can now get World in Conflict for just $19.99. This is the kind of deal that we absolutely love!

Especially considering how strong the reviews for the game have been.

If you're not familiar with World in Conflict relating it to the 80's classic Red Dawn would be a great start. Taking place in the mid 80's World in Conflict puts the player at the head of part of the American military tasked with repelling a Russian attack that's taken over parts of the United States.

While the game doesn't solely playout in North America you can tell simply by the boxart that the modern American landscape features prominently. I've been eyeing World in Conflict for awhile now and this deal has finally put me over the edge. If you're in the same boat head on over to Amazon and take part in today's deal.
