Robots and the Cities that Built Him

OK - you've got 1 week to program the best game you can muster ... what do you do?

Chances are you wouldn't get far. I know I wouldn't at least. The folks over at 2dboy though are a lot more creative than either of us. In just seven days, listening to Bette Midlers "From a Distance" on infinite loop they came up with Robot and the Cities that Built Him. A side scrolling action game that - while not done - makes an incredibly fun time waster.

Now, bear in mind that the game only offers two playable robots right now and there really only seems to be about 2- 3 different types of enemies. It doesn't slow the game's ingenious style - you'll loose half an hour in the snap of your fingers.

2dboy is the development studio behind the upcoming World of Goo that will be hitting the PC and Wii in the near future.  Check out the demo and don't blame us for the time spent in a daze.

World of Goo

Earlier this week we mentioned 2dboy and their current "7-day demo" Robot and the Cities that Built Him (which is a flash game available for freeplay right now on the 2dboy site.) In that post we mentioned the upcoming game World of Goo which is slated for release on both the PC and the Nintendo Wii.

In the following video you can see the game in action and I'm sure you'll feel the same way I do. The frenetic fast paced gameplay is both attractive and inviting. When I first saw it I was reminded of games like Loco Roco and Patapon which it obviously shares some visual styles with.

The game definitely has a sense of humor and based on what you see here it looks like it'll be an absolutely great Wii title Check it out and don't tell me you think the same thing!

World of Goo was originally slated for a release of early February but it has been pushed back to "Coming soon" according to the official page. Hopefully we get to see more of this title sooner rather than later.

Speed Linking for 1/20/08

  1. The How-To-Geek offers up a great tip for getting Windows Vista to automatically disable Aero before starting application. It also automagically turns it back on when you close the app. This is absolutely great for anyone looking to squeeze a little more performance out of their system during games like Crysis or (the PC game I'm currently working on) Hellgate London.
  2. The folks at 1Up have compiled a list of the top 101 free games of 2008. There are tons of familiar titles and tons of new ones so be sure to check it out.
  3. Could Kid Icarus be making his triumphant return at the hands of Factor 5? It's been a long time since i played th original Kid Icarus - I can't remember most of the game to be honest. The thing about Nintend, though, is that they love using nostalgia to sell games. After all the hype that floated around a potential Kid Icarus game during the launch of the Wii it only makes sense they'd give it a try. But Factor 5? After Lair I'm not quite sure what to expect. For more on this rumor check out the post over at Joystiq.
  4. Ever seen an M16 Light Gun for the original NES? Neither had we until GoNintendo found one on eBay. Check out their post about it.
  5. Lastly we have a list of the top 12 covers of the Still Alive. My personal favorite is below - if you've bought The Orange Box Soundtrack then you've got a copy of Jonathan Coulton singing the song but this other won is a pretty solid one too.

Fallout 2 Restoration Project 1.1 Released

Fallout 2 BoxartFallout 3 is probably one of the games I'm most looking forward to this year. The thing is I've never played Fallout or Fallout 2.

I own them - I've just never actually played them.

Right now looks like as good a time as ever to dust off the old CDs. A group of independent modders recently released the "Fallout 2 Restoration Project" and have just updated it to a 1.1 release. The Fallout 2 Restoration Project essentially sets out to add content to the game which, for whatever reason, wasn't originally included.

Listed as both a mod and an expansion the Project apparently contains several new areas (large and small), new dialogues, and even expanded portions of existing areas.

It sounds like the folks behind the Project are really dedicated and have done some great stuff here - I can't wait to check it out.

You can check out the official Fallout 2 Restoration Project 1.1 Thread over at No Mutants Allowed.

Highlander Game Trailer - Warning No Sean Connery

Admittedly I never got into the Highlander movies - I was totally hooked on the TV show though.

While the video below shows relatively little detail about the upcoming SCi title Highlander it does seem a bit promising.

It also got me thinking - how great would a Highlander MMO be?
