Syphon Filter Logan’s Shadow boxartAt this point one of my favorite games on the PSP is Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. It's easily in my top 5 games for Sony's handheld which should make it no surprise that I'm going to call Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow this week's top PSP pick.

Unlike most previous PSP titles Logan's Shadow runs at 333Mhz and boasts some of the best graphics available on the handheld. Along with new weapons and a new melee combat system Logan's Shadow also uses the Havok engine made famous by Half-Life 2. There's also a multiplayer option that's rumored to be a lot of fun and very original.

Based on all previews we've seen so far this game is striving to be the best console experience available on a portable!

Star Wars The Force Unleashed

LucasArts has been teasing Star Wars fans and Wii owners with the promise of a Wii-mote lightsaber mashup for sometime now. As a Star Wars fan AND a Wii owner I've been more than taken by the idea.

Previously LucasArts had hinted that the first Wii-mote lightsaber pairing wouldn't come until after the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed game - but no more.

Yesterday LucasArts confirmed that Star Wars: FU ... wait ... Star Wars: tFU would be hitting the Wii and utilizing the Wii-mote and nunchuck to pair lightsaber work with force powers.

"Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console's motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts. "We've worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force."

Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow is at the top of my wishlist for PSP games due out this year. To this point all the Syphon Filter games have been great and the most recent, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, ranks among my favorite PSP games.

If you're looking for a detailed writeup of this title I recommend heading over to PSP Fanboy to check out their latest hands-on report with the title.

PlayStation phone: No, Really … well, maybe

PSP PhoneFor sometime now we've been hearing news about a potential PSP Phone coming Sony Ericsson. We've seen mockups over and over and over again but nearly every time they were accompanied by denials or a general information blackout.

Well - that's no longer the case.

According to a report at Financial Times Sony Ericsson (50% of which is owned by Sony) has been eyeing both the Bravia and PlayStation brand for awhile now.

A PlayStation phone was also a possibility, said Mr Flint, although he stressed the technology behind such a device was still some way from being perfected.

“We need to make sure that it is a credible phone, and be sure we are justified in putting that identity on it,” said Mr Flint, who will step down as president in November.

While this isn't an official announcement it does offer a pretty interesting look at one potential future for serious gamers.

That's right - just when you thought it was safe to put your PSP down Sony is rolling out yet another upgrade to the handheld's firmware.

According to the announcement on The One and Only "PSP Updates!" Thread at the Playstation.com forums:

The PSP® system software version 3.70 update includes the following:

  • You can now set custom themes in [Theme Settings] under [Settings].
  • Support has been added for assigning buttons in [Remote Play].
  • A scene search feature has been added under [Video].
  • Sequential playback is now supported under [Video].
  • Simultaneous playback of content under [Music] and [Photo] is now supported.

For detailed information including limitations of usage, visit the PSP™ Web site for your region.

I have to say that nothing here is particularly exciting. Themes are an interesting addition but there's nothing here worth drooling over.

Sorry Sony,
